about

Myths are proud to present their latest offering: “Don’t Freak Out”! After a dormant winter of tinkering on their forthcoming self-produced sophomore LP, this gripping and dancey ditty has emerged to herald the band’s return to the cutting edge of Australian psych-pop.

A tongue-in-cheek look at the mid-20s anxieties of getting-your-shit-together, Don’t Freak Out merges bittersweet introspection with a sonic palette spanning disco, glam, and modern electronica - yielding a sunshiney-melancholy vibe as at home in the shower as it is on the dancefloor. An entire cupboard of vintage drum machines pulse along as the song is driven by haunting riffs from psychedelic, synthetic harpsichords. Bursts of ABBA-esque guitarmonies intercut with a washed-out narrator, sharing his insecurities and everyday struggles while his inner monologue (a fleet of robotic vocoder vocals) urges him on.

Like most of their upcoming LP “The Art of Pretending”, the track was mixed with Perth engineer Dave Parkin (the local legend behind Spacey Jane’s debut album Sunlight) and recorded/produced by Myths in an assortment of airbnb’s dotted over WA’s picturesque South-West.The tune provided songwriters Mike Nutt and Jamie Turner an opportunity to break new ground with a more personal take on lyricism, and opportunity to poke fun at their own admitted awkwardness at handling everyday life.

lyrics

Where did you go? I couldn't help myself I was lost in the moment

It’s out of your hands, you don’t understand small as a single grain of sand
Maybe i’m afraid, I’m out of focus and losing track of the days

I guess you agree that you’re asleep floating in some kind of reverie

I keep falling asleep on the long way home, forgetting the names of the people I know

I keep chasing my shadow

Searching the streets for the lost and found, I keep looking up but it’s a long way down

I keep chasing my shadow

So many ways to paint a perfect picture meant for another

Reap what you sow, just let it go, don’t get caught up in the afterglow
Visions slowly fade as all the pieces are falling back into place

Figuring out all of the doubt only exists when you’re freaking out

I keep falling asleep on the long way home, forgetting the names of the people I know

I keep chasing my shadow

Searching the streets for the lost and found, I keep looking up but it’s a long way down

I keep chasing my shadow
